Audiobook production

Strathmore has been producing audiobooks since 1996, and has had its own bespoke audiobook studios in central London since 2002. Our first-class facilities include Avid Pro Tools recording, Neumann mics and Focusrite preamps in a studio designed and installed by world-class professionals who have worked in Abbey Road and AIR.

Awards

We have won numerous awards: Audiofile Earphones (recent wins below), US Audies and from the Spoken Word Publishers’ Association.

External studios

If a recording cannot take place at our studio in Clerkenwell, we have connections with studios around the world. Our productions have been recorded in Glasgow, Manchester, Barbados, Los Angeles, Toronto, Auckland, Vancouver, Paris and Melbourne to name a few.

Sound design

Thanks to our network of musicians and editors, we are particularly well-equipped to produce children’s audiobooks. We also possess a sound effects library of over 10,000 items and can commission or create new music and effects for titles recorded in our studio. We can sometimes be found in on location or in the studio recording custom-made foley; we’ve used this for for adverts, enhanced audiobooks and children’s audiobooks. Listen to these examples: the podcast advert for Funny You Should Ask, Max Porter’s Lanny, and a full soundscape for Dara McAnulty’s Wild Child.

Music

We can commission music to suit most genres for use on children’s audiobooks (to replace the pictures!), for the intro and outro on non-illustrated books, themes for podcasts and adverts. We can also license library music, including classical orchestral recordings.

Recording in other languages and pronunciation help

Moreover, Strathmore has a varied network of native language readers and speakers; in the past we have drawn upon their expertise in New Testament Greek, Polish, Latin, Hungarian, German, and more, both for pronunciation help and also for recording in their native languages (such as the Bloomberg Connects Audio for the Courtauld Gallery through Green Lions Limited).

Restoration

We use world-class software to restore old recordings. We have devices capable of transferring reel to reel quarter inch tape, cassettes, and which can rip CDs with a far lower error rate than on a PC. Our Pro Tools plug-ins (including Isotope) are highly effective at removing background noise, hisses and even overcompression from recordings. For example William Golding’s original author recordings of Sea Trilogy were restored using our equipment. We can edit and split to modern requirements such as remastering with the accepted RMS levels and time restraints for sites like Audible.

Podcasts

We can record in-studio podcasts, guide guests through remote podcast recordings and also a hybrid of both. We’ve worked on podcast series of Sara Pascoes’ Sex, Power and Money, Lenny Henry and Marcus Ryder’s Black British Lives Matter and Auticon’s Autism: In Conversation With Auticon podcasts.

Hosting remote recording jobs

With our engineer running the recording external producers can ring in and direct recordings remotely. The producer can be from anywhere in the world and listen in live, our engineer can mark up the text and take care of the talent with same day delivery of raw audio to publisher’s editing team.

Portable recording kit

We have commissioned a portable recording kit consisting of three foldable soundproofed screens that almost fully wrap round, a mic, interface and reading desk mounted on a stand, a computer and headphones. The entire kit can be controlled remotely over the internet and can be delivered by car.

Meet the Team

  • Nicholas Jones

    FOUNDER
Nicholas Jones studied biological science at university. He expected to go into scientific publishing, but his first job at Michael Joseph found him copy-editing Dick Francis. He then went to Thames Television to manage tie-in books, records and merchandise. Here, he was able to use his interests in both typography and sound recording and learn many of the skills that have come into play at Strathmore. Additionally, he ran the publishing and bookselling operations at the RIBA for eight years before establishing Strathmore in 1995.

  • Elspeth McPherson

    MANAGING DIRECTOR
Elspeth has worked with Strathmore since April 2000 and loves her job (the thrill of being one of the first to have sight of a manuscript or finding the perfect narrator for an audiobook never dissipates). She started out producing and editing audiobook recordings then moved on to casting readers, co-ordinating the director and the post-production team for each project, and keeping everything to schedule. She couldn't be prouder to be running the company now.

  • Becky Mitchell

    OFFICE MANAGER
Becky joined Strathmore at the beginning of 2018 to take on the accounts, generally running the office, and looking after the green room. Previously she worked in ELT video and audio production, including 14 years at Motivation Sound Studios. At Motivation, she was part of the team hosting Strathmore audiobook recordings before the creation of our Clerkenwell studios.

  • Jonas Gustafsson

    AUDIO PRODUCTION MANAGER
Originally from Göteborg, Sweden, Jonas relocated to London in 2008 and studied Sonic Arts and Design at UAL London College of Communication. Following this he spent several years as a freelance producer, sound designer and audio editor. Jonas joined Strathmore in 2019, where he is now in charge of the studios, managing the production, editing, and delivery of projects.

  • Alex Brown

    ASSISTANT STUDIO MANAGER
Alex graduated in 2014 after studying Sound Engineering and Audio Design at the University of Kent. He joined Strathmore in 2021 after years of working in the voiceover industry and freelance producing. Alex assists in the day-to-day running of the studios, editing & producing audiobooks as well as maintaining Strathmore’s file servers.

  • Megan Blair

    AUDIO PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
Megan has just completed her Masters in Publishing and is delighted to have found somewhere that combines her love of performance and literature. Megan focuses on post-production sound checks, organising the greenrooms and taking care of our readers, editors and producers.
